Orthotists

OrthotistsAn orthotist is a healthcare professional who makes and fits braces and splints (orthoses) for patients who need added support for body parts that have been weakened by injury, disease, or disorders of the nerves, muscles, or bones.

Orthotists work under a physicians’ orders to adapt purchased braces or create custom-designed braces. In other words, orthotists assist patients with disabling conditions of limbs and spine or with partial or total absence of limb by fitting and preparing orthopedic braces or prostheses.

Orthotists perform as members of clinic teams or as individual workers. They treat each patient as unique, and they are an important part of our team at Right Way CMS Inc. of Riviera Beach, Florida because they use technological and craft knowledges and skills together with applied knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, body mechanics, and clinical practices and problems related to orthotic and prosthetic devices to do their work, which includes:

  • Fitting patients with braces. Braces are worn for a long or short period of time, and serve as rigid immobilizing devices, or as light flexible supporting or correcting devices designed to permit a fixed range of movement and function.
  • Fitting patients having deformed or malfunctioning feet with orthopedic shoes. These shoes are modified to incorporate features designed to replace missing portions of feet, relieve pressure, shift weight, or permit desired movement of the ankle. The shoes enhance the balance, mobility, and appearance of the patients.
  • Fitting patients with prostheses (artificial limbs). These prostheses are designed to restore the maximum possible function with minimum energy consumption, and to provide optimum appearance, and static and dynamic alignment. The parts of the prostheses must have a proper relationship and fit one to another and to the patients’ body in order to insure equilibrium in gait and stance required for function and comfort.

Our orthotists are responsible for aligning and modifying the devices, evaluating patient’s progress, keeping accurate patient’s records, and teaching patients how to care for the prosthetic or orthotic device. They use a variety of tools such as drills, hammers, anvils, and saws to manipulate wood, plastic, metal, fabric, lamination, and leather to create comfort, flexibility, and almost 100% mobility with a very life-like appearance.

At  Right Way CMS Inc. of Riviera Beach, Florida we count on orthotists that possess a great deal of mechanical ability, manual dexterity, compassion, hand-eye coordination, and spatial judgment.
